Hi! I’m Melanie!

Thank you for stopping by! I am a Registered Nurse and 2008 graduate of Wor-Wic Community College with an Associate’s Degree in nursing. I am a Licensed Massage Therapist and 2022 graduate of Anne Arundel Community College with an Associate’s Degree in Massage Therapy.

I have worked as a nurse in the hospital, home health, hospice, pediatrics, camp settings, with developmental disabilities, in, case management and in third world missions.

In nursing school I was taught basic effleurage for my patients. When I lived in a 3rd world area of the Dominican Republic and people from the village came to me with loved ones dying of cancer, there was no hospice to refer them to, so I made some massage oil with essential oils and taught them basic effleurage. The families reported their loved one experienced relief from pain and better rest. Whenever I gently rubbed a client’s back or feet, I noticed them calm down and breathe slower and become less anxious. Between experiences with my patients and my own experiences with receiving massage I returned to school to learn the science of massage therapy and how to practice massage therapy formally.

Since completing massage therapy education my continuing education has been focused on the mind body connection, the effects of stress and trauma on the body, how to care for those who have suffered trauma and its relationship to the nervous and fascial system.

I have received 5 CEU’s in providing massage to clients who have suffered trauma including 1 CEU in providing massage therapy to pediatric clients who have suffered trauma and 1.5 hours in pediatric massage. I have completed 3 hours in ethics, 1 in unconscious bias, 1 in cultural competency and diversity and multiple CEU’s in the mind body relationship as well as the fascial system.

I practice massage therapy part time. I provide nurse consultation on a limited basis (if you are interested ask) and I advocate when I see injustice, a need or someone asks for my help.

What kind of therapy is right for you?

I will present you questions that will help you to determine which massage is best for you followed by the services I offer.

How is your health?

Do you just enjoy massage and want to relax?

Are you desiring to maintain your health through regular massage?

Have you been injured?

Are you looking to relieve muscle tension or pain or increase range of motion?

Do you feel overwhelmed or suffer from poor sleep, anxiety, depression or PTSD?

Have you recently lost a loved one and are dealing with grief?

Have you been through a recent trauma?

Have you lived through years of stress or trauma?

Is your body frail or do you have a life limiting condition and just want comfort?

Do you want your posture to improve?

Do you want to try to relieve specific symptoms?

Are you an athlete wanting to improve performance?

How you answer those questions will help you determine which massage is right for you.

I offer the following services.

Swedish Massage: Massage oil or cream is used with smooth, gliding strokes. Swedish massage uses firm but gentle pressure to promote relaxation, ease muscle tension and create other health benefits. It is a classic massage that will ease your stress and allow you to slip into a calm state of relaxation.

Deep Tissue: Designed to remove severe tension, deep tissue massage is a technique used to relieve both muscles and connective tissue below the surface. It helps to improve range of motion and heal injuries below the surface.

Myofascial Release uses techniques to stretch the fascia in order to release restrictions, increase range of motion and promote healing. Fascia is connective tissue that surrounds muscles, bones and organs. It is interconnected like a web that can form patterns based on biomechanical, traumatic, emotional and psychosocial reasons. Patterns can produce imbalances and pain. There are 10 times more nerve endings in the fascia then the muscles.

Integrative Massage: The therapist will conduct an assessment to identify muscle imbalances, movement restrictions and palpate for knots. The therapist will open with Swedish and when a knot or restriction is identified, the therapist will use techniques from Deep Tissue, PNF or Myofascial Release to address them. The therapist may use instruments such as stones, scraping tools or other devices to apply ischemic pressure. The session will be closed with Swedish or MFR to try to end in a relaxed state.

Therapeutic Touch: This modality is best for clients who are unable to tolerate a full massage, who are frail and are sensitive to touch. It is appropriate for those at end of life, who have neurological or developmental disorders who are hypersensitive to touch, those who have suffered severe trauma and anyone in frail health. The therapist will create a plan with the client that includes soothing techniques that minimize friction. Includes compression, gentle soothing strokes, passive stretching and range of motion and static holds

Sports Massage is a high energy massage performed at a rapid pace to energetic music from medium to firm pressure and includes a variety of techniques. It increases circulation and aids in flexibility

What is Hesed?

Hesed is the heart behind the practice.

Stress & You

Many diseases are caused by or exacerbated by stress. The body has a sympathetic nervous system which is known as the “fight or flight” state and it has a parasympathetic nervous system which is known as the “rest and digest” or “feed and breed” state. Massage therapy helps the body transition from the sympathetic state into the parasympathetic state where the body can relax, rest and repair.

We will explore the effects of stress in 3 levels.

Level 1 – Immediate Stress includes sympathetic fight or flight signs including:

Increased heart rate and blood pressure.

Rapid breathing.

Perspiring and sweaty palms.

Inhibition of lacrimal and salivary glands.

General muscular, sphincter and vascular constriction.

Indigestion and Nervous Stomach

Level 2 Continued Stress

Feelings of being pressured or driven.

Exhaustion and Fatigue.

Anxiety.

Memory Loss.

Learning Impairment.

Colds and Flu.

Headaches.

Appetite disturbances.

Weight gain or loss.

Connective tissue degredation.

Sleep disturbances.

Marital, family and workplace discord.

Increased alcohol, smoking or caffeine consumption.

During this phase the help of medical and psychological professionals is highly recommended. (Canadian Center for Occupational Health and Safety)

Level 3 Ongoing Stress /Years

Insomnia

Errors in judgement.

Personality changes.

Autoimmune disorders.

Eating disorders.

Chronic Fatigue.

Heart Disease.

Mental Illness.

Asthma.

PTSD-like signs and symptoms

Level 3 stress warrants significant intervention from professionals. (Canadian Center for Occupational Health and Safety)

Hope is the joyful expectation of good.
